Well, here we are again. I hope your week’s been full of exciting pod things. This week I wanted to take the chance to recommend and pay homage to a show that’s given me immense joy over the past few years. It’s not a podcast, but I think there’s stuff we as podcasters can learn from its latest series, recorded under lockdown.

But first, let’s crank up the news machine!

Using email to build a viable (fiction) podcast business

Sean Howard, cofounder of the Fable and Folly network has a piece about how you can use email marketing to grow your fiction podcast, saying “when it comes time to raise money for that next season, announce a live event or ask people to participate in something important, podcasters suddenly find themselves struggling to get the word out. This is where our feed can quickly fail us”.

The podcasting hype house from hell

I’ve only kept one ear on the whole Chinese Ximalaya, Himalaya, HiStudios thing, but this article from the Verge’s Ashley Carman is doing the rounds, and for good reason. Usually I always try and satisfy one question with the work I do (“will it make my podcast better?”) and I can’t really justify it for this one, but it’s very much in the zeitgeist so it deserves s mention. Plus, it’s wild.

The podcast editor power struggle: an overview

Founder of #PodRevDay and the Geopats network, plus friend of the Originverse – which I’ve just this second decided to name the little set of properties I run under my company – Stephanie Fuccio interviewed nine podcast editors who shared their experiences of working in the industry, and the challenges they face. Far from just being a chance to complain, the article offers solutions to each problem, with a view to making the industry better for all involved.

Is Anchor full of dead shows, and does it matter?

Podnews’ James Cridland has been all up in the Podcast Index database again, this time looking to answer the question “is Anchor really full of dead shows?” The answer isn’t a complete surprise, but the data is interesting and Anchor is not the only one we should be giving a sideways glance to.

Since you ask me for a review of a radio programme...

Last Thursday saw the culmination of what I can best describe as a “radio event”. At its simplest level, it was simply a series of radio shows broadcast over six weeks, but series 9 of John Finnemore’s Souvenir Programme is so, so much more.

New podcast reviews

Two new podcasts reviewed recently that might be worth a listen.

Creeps In The Crypt

Creeps in the Crypt is new in the True Crime category. After you get through the first contextless two minutes, the show starts to make sense, so check it out if you’re making a true crime podcast and you want a guest to talk about creepy things with. (I nearly wrote “to get creepy with” and thought better of it.)

Chicano Mundo

The Chicano Mundo podcast by Sigifredo Jimenez “dives into the vast and rich culture that Chicano brings to society”. Episode 5 gets into a pretty heavy story, but the topics are varied and there’s plenty of history to get your teeth into.
